Westra, Pellizotti among two new signings as Astana Pro Team begins to add riders
Astana Pro Team is happy to announce the signing of two new riders for the 2014 season.
Lieuwe Westra, the 2013 national time trial champion of the Netherlands, will join Astana Pro Team for the 2014-15 season.
"Lieuwe is a very strong time trialist and climber, and joins Astana as a rider who could help Vincenzo Nibali next year at the Tour de France," said Astana Pro Team General Manager Alexandr Vinokurov.
A professional cyclist for eight years, Westra spent the last five seasons with Vacansoleil DCM. He won a stage at the 2013 Tour of California, and has more than a dozen Top-10s in World Tour races this year. Last year he won the Tour of Denmark and a stage at Paris-Nice.
Italian rider Franco Pellizotti will rejoin his former teammates at Astana Pro Team next season for a one-year contract. He Italian national champion in 2012 and has many victories over a long and storied history as a professional cyclist.
"Franco is a veteran rider with more than 10 years of experience as a professional, and we are very happy to welcome him back among his friends and family. He rode at Liquigas-Cannondale with Vincenzo and they know each other well. He will be a valuable asset in our preparations for the Tour de France next year," Vinokurov said.
